Get to know Amy
My husband BJ and I grew up in Valparaiso, Indiana. BJ and two colleagues own IN Space - an aerospace engineering research firm in Lafayette - and I have worked for him since 2003. We do government contract work, which is quite similar in terms of the rules and regulations to school finance. He does the cool rocket stuff and I keep the lights on and make sure that all the paperwork is filled out correctly. We have three children, Mary Grace, who just graduated and is attending the University of Iowa, Claire who is a senior, and Jack who is in 8th grade.
Throughout my children's educations I have been an active and involved parent. I've participated in all three schools' parent councils, and was the secretary and the president of the WLIS parent council. I was a Girl Scout leader. I've done just about every job a parent can do in our schools, from popping popcorn for Popcorn Fridays to making yeast rolls for the basketball team to making the poppies for "Oz" to planning Fun Nights to chaperoning field trips to helping throw classroom parties to selling mums... You name it, I've probably done it, as long as it doesn't involve sports. My favorite job with parent council was the newsletter that I wrote for several years. I had a really good time putting little jokes into it, and everyone was very understanding when I listed Homecoming as an away game (oops!). During Covid I was a small part of the large team of people who made sure that our food insecure students continued to receive school lunches when the schools were closed.
As a kindergarten through college public school graduate, and as someone who has a degree in education, I feel strongly that our public schools are a moral imperative. We all benefit from our public schools, whether we have children currently attending or not. If I am re-elected for a second term I will continue to work hard to advocate for our West Lafayette students, and students all over the state.
